Latent Labs

Latent Labs builds AI foundation models for generative protein and molecular design, partnering with biotech and pharma firms to create novel therapeutic molecules.

Latent Labs builds AI foundation models for generative protein and molecular design, working with biotechnology and pharmaceutical partners on novel therapeutic molecules. The company was founded in 2023 and emerged from stealth in 2025. It maintains offices in London and San Francisco and has raised $50 million in funding.

Its products, Latent-X and Latent-X2, are frontier generative AI models for protein and molecular design; the company reports state-of-the-art results in protein binding for both. Technical work spans generative AI, computational biology, protein design, protein structure prediction, molecular design and drug discovery, supported by in-house wet lab facilities for experimental validation.

The team is drawn from DeepMind, Microsoft, Google, Stability AI, Exscientia, Mammoth Bio, Altos Labs and Zymergen. Founder Dr. Simon Kohl was formerly co-lead of DeepMind's protein design team and worked on AlphaFold. The company states its mission as making biology programmable, and operates on a partnership model with biotech and pharmaceutical firms.
