Astro Mechanica

Astro Mechanica builds the world's first turboelectric adaptive jet engine and the Duality™ propulsion system, targeting efficient supersonic flight for commercial and government applications.

Astro Mechanica is a vertically integrated aerospace company working on supersonic aircraft, starting with the engine. Its central product is described as the world's first turboelectric adaptive jet engine, a design that decouples energy extraction from thrust production so that efficiency can be maintained across the speed range, from subsonic cruise to supersonic flight. Alongside this, the company is developing the Duality™ propulsion system, which integrates advanced airframe and engine technologies with the aim of making supersonic transport as efficient and economical as commercial air travel is today.

The engineering work spans turboelectric propulsion, adaptive jet engine design, airframe-engine integration and propulsion systems more broadly. Beyond commercial transport, Astro Mechanica is developing adaptable, high-speed systems intended to close aircraft performance gaps for the United States government. The company is backed by Y Combinator and Lowercarbon Capital and operates in the United States.

Astro Mechanica describes itself as having a flat organisational structure, with a team that combines specialist depth with a generalist approach. It characterises its working method as continuous designing, building and testing. The stated mission is to make high-speed flight flexible, accessible and sustainable, on the premise that rapid, on-demand, point-to-point mobility will become a standard for moving people and goods.
