Underwriters Laboratories Inc.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. is an independent nonprofit research organisation, founded in 1894, running six institutes on fire, chemical, electrochemical, digital and AI safety and materials discovery, with openly published findings.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. traces its origins to 1894, when its founders identified potentially lethal electrical hazards at the Chicago World's Fair. It operates today as UL Research Institutes, an independent nonprofit research organisation dedicated to identifying and mitigating risks to public safety. The organisation is guided by science rather than commercial interests, commits to objectivity in its findings, and publishes its results openly, sharing them with manufacturers, policymakers, firefighters and the public.

The work is carried out through six specialised institutes: the Fire Safety Research Institute, the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute, the Chemical Insights Research Institute, the Digital Safety Research Institute, the Materials Discovery Research Institute and an Education Institute. The technical portfolio spans fire safety, electrochemical safety (including lithium-ion battery fire risk), the long-term effects of manufactured chemicals on people and ecosystems, cybersecurity vulnerabilities in artificial intelligence systems, safety at the human-digital interface, materials discovery, and energy transition and clean energy. Research is organised around three grand challenges.

For engineers and researchers working on algorithms and intelligent systems, the Digital Safety Research Institute is the most directly relevant unit, examining how AI systems fail and how those failures can be detected and mitigated. The Materials Discovery Research Institute applies research to the safe and sustainable deployment of emerging materials and technologies. The organisation collaborates with experts worldwide while remaining rooted in the United States, and disseminates safety knowledge across manufacturing and consumer products, chemicals, energy, fire services, policy and regulation, and education.
