Whisker Labs
Whisker Labs develops intelligent electrical sensors and a concierge fire-safety service, analysing millions of electrical signals per second to detect hazards and prevent electrical fires.
Whisker Labs, founded in 2015, builds intelligent electrical sensors and a concierge fire-safety service that monitors home electrical networks to detect and prevent electrical fires before they start. Its flagship product, Ting, is a sensor and service combination that watches a home's wiring, outlets, devices and utility-supplied power around the clock, analysing 30 million electrical signals per second to identify the microscopic sparks and arcs that precede nearly all electrical fires. The underlying work spans electrical signal analysis, IoT sensing, real-time hazard detection and electrical grid monitoring.
Beyond the individual home, Whisker Labs operates a distributed sensor grid network that provides real-time visibility into the health of the electrical grid, with applications in utility grid resilience and wildfire prevention. The company reports that its technology protects over one million homes in the United States and has helped prevent more than 25,000 potentially devastating fires; it states that the service stops four out of five electrical fires. A related Fire Safety Team service pairs homeowners with experts in electrical fire prevention to guide hazard resolution, including a $1,000 credit toward repairs.
The company works across home safety, property insurance, utilities, wildfire prevention, electrical infrastructure and smart-home IoT. It was founded after a cofounder's family member lost their home and a pet to an electrical fire in 2015, and describes a singular mission to prevent electrical fires before they start, with an emphasis on expert, personal guidance for homeowners and on affordability of hazard repairs.
