Aurora develops the Aurora Driver, a self-driving system built to operate freight-hauling trucks. The system pairs proprietary hardware with software powered by what the company calls Verifiable AI, covering perception and object detection, decision-making and navigation through complex road conditions. Its technical work spans autonomous vehicles, lidar hardware and trucking automation, with an engineering team that includes safety experts and operators.

Two components anchor the platform. FirstLight, Aurora's proprietary lidar, detects objects at distances of more than 450 metres. The system as a whole is claimed to detect and react to hazards up to 11 seconds sooner than human drivers at highway speeds. The Aurora Driver is designed as an independent platform, integrating with multiple vehicle manufacturers and transportation networks rather than being tied to a single automaker, and is engineered for near-round-the-clock operation.

The company is publicly listed on Nasdaq as AUR and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, with offices across the United States. Its trucks are currently hauling customer loads in Texas. Named industry partners number seven, including Volvo Trucks, PACCAR, FedEx, Uber Freight, Werner, Schneider and Ryder.
