Substrate
Substrate builds next-generation semiconductor fabs using accelerator-based X-ray lithography and AI/GPU simulation, targeting 2nm-and-beyond chip resolution.
Substrate is a semiconductor manufacturing company founded in 2022 and based in the United States. It is developing next-generation semiconductor fabs built around a new form of advanced X-ray lithography driven by particle accelerators, which produce the world's brightest beams. Rather than iterating on existing lithographic approaches, which the company regards as approaching physical and economic limits, Substrate is building an entirely new manufacturing method. Its stated aim is to restore American leadership in advanced semiconductor manufacturing and to ensure that the country's AI industry runs on an American-built semiconductor stack.
The company's technical work spans X-ray lithography, particle accelerator physics, advanced optics, high-speed mechanical systems, semiconductor process engineering and fabrication. A central part of the effort is end-to-end simulation powered by artificial intelligence and GPU computing, which the company says has compressed problems that would have taken years into days. Substrate operates as a vertically integrated organisation, combining novel accelerator physics, optics and mechanical systems within one firm.
Substrate has raised over $100 million, with investors including Peter Thiel. Its target is chip resolution equivalent to the 2nm node and beyond, produced in fabs intended to extend Moore's Law while reducing costs. The company has set an ambition of bringing wafer costs to $10,000 per wafer by the end of the decade, against roughly $100,000 today. The work is situated across the semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, lithography and AI hardware industries.
