Stand

Stand is a San Francisco climate insurance company using physics simulation and AI to model property-level wildfire and hurricane risk and cover homes traditional insurers avoid.

Stand is a climate insurance company based in San Francisco that applies physics simulation and artificial intelligence to price property-level risk. Its approach is designed to underwrite properties that traditional insurers decline, beginning with wildfire exposure in California and extending to hurricane risk in Florida. Where incumbent carriers rely on coarse proxies and backward-looking loss data, Stand models each property individually, at building-block resolution, using satellite imagery, field inspection and deterministic catastrophe models.

At the centre of the company's technical work is the Stand World Model, a frontier AI model of the physical world that simulates how catastrophic events interact with structures at portfolio scale. The relevant disciplines include AI/ML, physics simulation, deterministic catastrophe modelling, computer vision and satellite imagery analysis, geospatial risk modelling and property-level risk scoring.

Stand sells two products: property-level wildfire insurance for California homeowners and hurricane coverage expanding into Florida. Coverage is priced to reflect mitigation and resilience work; the company advises homeowners on highest-leverage measures such as defensible space and ember-resistant vents, and adjusts premiums accordingly. The stated orientation is to build systems that change outcomes rather than merely prices, and to keep coverage available where traditional insurers have withdrawn.
