Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials recycles end-of-life lithium-ion batteries to recover critical minerals and refines them into domestic battery components, alongside grid-scale energy storage and microgrid projects.

Redwood Materials, founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, a co-founder and former chief technology officer of Tesla, builds a closed-loop domestic battery supply chain in the United States. The company recycles end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, recovering up to 95% of the critical minerals they contain - lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper - and then refines and manufactures those recovered materials into new battery components on American soil. It is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America and processes roughly 90% of such batteries recycled on the continent.

Its operations extend beyond recycling. Redwood deploys large-scale energy storage systems intended to supply data centres and the power grid, and runs a microgrid project outside Reno, Nevada, that repurposes used electric-vehicle batteries. The company operates two campuses, in Nevada and South Carolina, alongside an R&D centre in San Francisco.

The technical work spans battery recycling, critical-minerals recovery, materials refining, component manufacturing, energy storage and microgrid design. The stated aim is to treat batteries as perpetually recyclable resources rather than disposable products, keeping materials in circulation indefinitely while reducing American dependence on foreign critical inputs.

Redwood serves industries including electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, energy storage, data centres, utilities and the automotive sector.
