Forterra

Forterra, founded in 2002, develops autonomous mission systems for defence, including self-driving ground vehicles, robotic swarms and the open AutoDrive and OASIS architectures.

Forterra builds autonomous mission systems for defence, with a focus on self-driving ground vehicles and coordinated swarms of robotic systems. Founded in 2002, the company works across self-driving ground autonomy, multi-agent coordination, autonomous mission systems and off-highway vehicle autonomy - areas of direct relevance to engineers working on perception, planning, control and multi-robot orchestration.

Its core platform, AutoDrive, is an autonomous driving stack for ground systems. It is paired with OASIS (Open Architecture Standard for Interoperable Systems), a modular, open architecture designed so that government and third-party developers can build on AutoDrive without vendor lock-in. The emphasis on interoperable, standards-based design is central to the company's technical approach.

Forterra reports being contracted on all four U.S. Department of Defense ground autonomy programmes and to have secured the first production contract for self-driving systems in the U.S. military. Its systems are deployed across four continents and in more than ten countries. Commercial applications include autonomous yard trucks for logistics centres and driverless off-highway logging trucks operating in all weather and varied terrain without infrastructure improvements.

In 2025 the company raised a $238m Series C round, at a valuation of $1 billion. Forterra is based in the United States.
